Year 6
Spring term
As we entered the Spring Term, Year 6 demonstrated outstanding determination, enthusiasm, and resilience across all areas of school life. This term marked a key stage in their journey as they worked hard to prepare for their upcoming national exams. Our pupils showed exceptional dedication to their SATs revision, approaching each challenge with focus, maturity, and a positive attitude. We are extremely proud of the commitment and effort they displayed throughout the term.
Throughout the Spring Term, Year 6 have shown fantastic commitment and progress across all areas of their core learning. In Reading, pupils kick-started their SATs revision with focused comprehension practice and continued to enjoy huge successes with Accelerated Reader - between January and March, they read over an incredible 1,300 books, amounting to approximately 7,569,582 words! A huge well done to everyone who also took part in our new half-term reading challenges. World Book Day 2025 was another highlight, with fantastic costumes on display (Miss Harrison particularly enjoyed dressing up as Grandma from Little Red Riding Hood), alongside designing their own book covers and, of course, plenty of reading throughout the day.
In Writing, pupils produced some outstanding pieces linked to Goodnight Mister Tom, the short silent movie Alma, and the intriguing case of Three Little Pigs vs. The Big Bad Wolf. Their dedication to additional reading at home truly paid off, as they created internal monologues, flashback scenes, and powerful allegorical poems, exploring the impact of World War Two on children in the 1940s. Alma inspired the creation of a suspenseful narrative, with thrilling endings that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Meanwhile, persuasive letters written to ‘judges’ passionately argued for the conviction of the Three Little Pigs, highlighting pupils’ creative thinking and persuasive skills. Throughout the term, Year 6 have consistently demonstrated a drive to develop their writing to the highest standard and continue to push themselves to become the best writers they can be.
In Maths, pupils tackled a wide range of topics, including time, measurement, fraction, decimals and percentages, ratio and proportion. They worked hard to build both their arithmetic accuracy and their reasoning skills. Mock tests showed incredible progress, with pupils demonstrating not only improved scores but also an inspiring commitment to striving for greatness every day.
Year 6 have continued to shine across the wider curriculum this Spring Term, showing curiosity, creativity and critical thinking in all subjects. In Geography, pupils explored different energy sources around the world, carefully considering the benefits and drawbacks of each. They concluded their studies by debating which renewable sources would be most effective for use within our own local area. In History, the focus was on World War Two, where pupils learned about the key events that led to the outbreak of the war, Hitler’s rise to power, the impact the war had on Great Britain, and the ways Britain prepared for the challenges ahead.
In Science, pupils studied Electricity, constructing circuits and detailed diagrams while investigating how different components affected each others’ performance. They also explored the topic of light, investigating how light reflects and refracts, and examining how shadows are formed and change throughout the day. A highlight was British Science Day, where the focus was on Forces. Pupils investigated gravity and friction by designing marble mazes, carefully adapting their courses to either speed up or slow down the movement of the marbles - showcasing brilliant teamwork and problem-solving skills.
During Term 3’s R.E Day, pupils explored the thought-provoking question: Is anything ever eternal? They reflected on aspects of life that could be considered everlasting. In Term 4, pupils developed their learning further by exploring the concept of salvation, considering influential people both globally and personally, deepening their understanding of the significance of hope and renewal within religious beliefs.
In addition to their academic achievements, Year 6 also enjoyed success in the sports field. Our boys’ and girls’ football teams took part in their first competitive games following a fantastic round of tryouts. We are delighted to share that the girls’ team successfully advanced to the finals and will have the exciting opportunity to play at Leyton Orient Football Ground. A huge well done to all involved!
This term, Year 6 were fortunate to welcome Gillingham’s local MP, Naushabah Khan, for an inspiring visit. Pupils listened attentively as Ms Khan spoke about her important role in representing our community and the work she does both locally and nationally. Pupils impressed with their thoughtful and mature questions, raising key issues such as school budgets, the impact of rising house prices, and the support available for vulnerable members of our community. It was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to see democracy in action and to understand the importance of community engagement.
Year 6 also took part in World Poetry Day, where creativity and performance were truly celebrated. Pupils worked hard to prepare a range of individual and group poems, and collaborated to rehearse a whole year group performance piece. They proudly shared their poetry with parents and carers, showcasing their talents, confidence, and passion for the spoken word.
It has been a fantastic Spring Term, filled with memorable highlights, impressive achievements, and plenty of opportunities for our Year 6 pupils to shine. From academic success to creative collaborations and inspiring visits, our pupils have continued to make us incredibly proud. As we move into the Summer Term, we look forward to an equally busy and exciting few months ahead. Including the final preparations for SATs, the much-anticipated PGL residential trip, sports days, end-of-year celebrations, and the beginning of their transition to secondary school. We are excited to see what more our wonderful Year 6 pupils will accomplish as they approach their final chapter of their primary school journey.
