Year 2
Spring Term
This term in Year 2 has been filled with exciting learning opportunities, creative projects, and memorable experiences. The children have been enthusiastic and engaged across all areas of the curriculum, and it’s been a joy to see their confidence and curiosity grow.
In our core subjects, we’ve been building new skills while having lots of fun along the way. In reading, some children have continued their phonics lessons to strengthen their decoding and blending skills, while others have been focusing on developing their comprehension. Reading is an important part of our daily routine, and many children have enjoyed using Accelerated Reader to quiz on their books and show how well they understand what they’ve read.
Our English work has been inspired by The Wolf Story, a fantastic tale that helped us explore storytelling from a new perspective. We used this text to write poems, persuasive letters, and even alternative endings to the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. The children showed great imagination and made thoughtful choices in their writing, thinking carefully about characters, settings, and emotions.
In Maths, we’ve been learning to tell the time to the nearest five minutes – a tricky skill that the children approached with perseverance and enthusiasm. We also explored 2D and 3D shapes, learning how to describe their properties and identify patterns in the world around us. It’s been brilliant to see the children applying their mathematical thinking in practical ways.
Our wider curriculum lessons have taken us on a journey through history, science, art, and more. In History, we learned about the history of flight, discovering how people’s dreams of flying became reality over time. In Science, we studied animals, including humans, learning about their needs, their habitats, and how they grow. In DT, the children designed and constructed their own Ferris wheels – a great opportunity to apply problem-solving skills and work collaboratively.
In RE, we explored the Easter story and its meaning for Christians, reflecting on themes of hope and new beginnings. Our PSHE lessons focused on families and relationships, helping children understand the importance of kindness, respect, and communication. In PE, we played team games that developed our attacking and defending skills, and in ICT we continued to build our digital confidence.
We also had the opportunity to go on several enriching trips this term. We took a walk to the local park, where we studied habitats and recorded geographical features, using our observations to inform our learning back in the classroom. One highlight was performing at the Central Theatre in Chatham, where we joined other schools in a celebration of music – a truly uplifting experience for all involved. Perhaps the favourite trip of all was our visit to Rochester. Travelling by train and exploring the Guildhall Museum gave the children a taste of local history and a real sense of adventure.
Looking ahead to Term 5, we are full of excitement for the learning and experiences to come. Our upcoming trip to the beach in Westgate is something we are all eagerly anticipating. It will be a wonderful way to explore the seaside environment and enjoy a day out with our friends.
Thank you for your continued support this term. We are so proud of all the progress and enthusiasm the children have shown, and we can’t wait to see what the next term brings!
