Year 4
Spring term
Year 4 had a very busy and an incredibly productive Spring Term! We are very proud of the enthusiasm with which the children dived into each new topic and aspired to improve their skills and knowledge.
In reading and writing, we enjoyed the novel Varjak Paw by SF Said, which inspired some fantastic writing outcomes, including writing a diary entry as Varjak Paw, a pure-bred Mesopotamian Blue cat, who has to escape his fancy home and find his way in the real world. The children also created a back story for one of the other main characters and finally wrote an explanation text for the Way of Jalal, an ancient martial art for cats! In maths, we delved into the world of decimals for the very first time, and the children worked hard to increase their knowledge and understanding of the decimal system and how it relates to fractions.
Our wider curriculum was equally exciting. In History, we learnt about the Anglo-Saxons and thoroughly enjoyed a special history day which included acting out a battle, trying on a soldier’s helmet for size and even playing a game Anglo-Saxons used to enjoy! Our science lessons were all about the electricity and the different components needed to make a circuit. The children really enjoyed experimenting with different ways to make a circuit, whilst learning important scientific vocabulary, such as insulator and conductor.
One of the highlights this term was the World Book Day, which allowed both the children and staff to dress up and celebrate books and reading. Our year 4 children impressed yet again with their great costumes! Another special occasion was the World Poetry Day, which we celebrated by creating a class poem inspired by some of the poetry we had been reading. A few days later, we then had the privilege of welcoming parents into school for our Poetry Matinee to hear our class poems being performed as well as a selection of poetry written earlier in the year by individual children.
After a great term, we look forward to seeing what we can achieve in term 5!
