Year 3

Spring Term

In year 3 we have been very productive in our Spring Term and are very proud of the new learning our children have done and the enthusiasm they have for their learning.

In writing, we enjoyed the story of Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman, which has engaged our children in the thrilling journey of a father who goes out to buy milk for his children to have their breakfast, but instead is abducted by aliens and meets a scientist who is a stegosaurus. This has inspired our children to create some brilliant writing, starting with a character description of the stegosaurus, Professor Steg. The children have also created a cross stick poem about aliens from the story, a character description about Professor Steg and also were able to create an explanation piece about the time machine the Professor created and uses.

In reading, for our fiction text, we analysed ‘The Sheep Pig’, for non-fiction we looked at ‘Adam’s farm’. With these, we learned to make predictions and use our prior knowledge to assist us with this.

In maths, we focused on fractions, learning how to find fractions of shapes and amounts, adding and subtracting fractions and equivalent fractions. We then moved on to time, learning how to tell the time, both digital and analogue and calculating the amount of time a certain activity takes.

Our wider curriculum was also very exciting this term. In Geography we learnt all about Antarctica and the features it poses. We learnt about the animals that live there and why people do not live there. With this learning, we created a postcard about all the hobbies that you can partake in if you do visit Antarctica and who in history has explored Antarctica such as Shakleton.

One of the highlights this term was the school trip we took to the Natural history museum to explore the fossils there and also the dino digging workshop, when they acted as archeologists discovering and digging up dinosaur fossils. The children thoroughly enjoyed this and it helped to enhance their knowledge and learning in the classroom.

We are looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in term 5!
